Our Farm

Zauberland Alpakas has been among the pioneers of German and European alpaca breeding for 26 years – specializing in breeding high-quality Huacaya and Suri alpacas.

Our family business was founded in January 1999 by graduate engineer Hartwig Kraft von Wedel with 17 Huacaya alpaca mares. Today we farm around 13 hectares of agricultural land in Saxony, and about 140 alpacas currently belong to our farm. Hardly any other German alpaca breeding operation has equipped as many breeders with good breeding animals as ours.

A Full-Time Business Since 2000

Since 2000, our farm has been the first agricultural business in Germany run as a full-time operation specializing in alpaca breeding. Zauberland Alpakas is our stud name – the name under which we appear at breeding shows. Sachsen Alpakas is the official business name of the farm.

Meanwhile, a whole series of other full-time farms in Germany have also come to specialize in alpaca breeding; the market is marked by continuous, sustainable growth. In other neighboring European countries, too, there are breeders who make a fully professional living from alpaca breeding.

Since 2004, Katharina Kraft von Wedel has also been involved in breeding management. Within the family business, she is also responsible for processing alpaca end products; her own designs are used to make coats and hats for women and children from woven plush fabrics made of 75% alpaca and 25% mohair.

To manufacture and sell these end products, and to run our Schloss Wiederoda – purchased in 2008 – along with the tourism business we are building there, we founded Kraft von Wedel GbR in 2010. Today, the Zauberland Alpakas team includes two employees in addition to Mr. and Mrs. Kraft von Wedel.
